A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machinery that is quite like a forklift. It allows the operator to utilize forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain objects, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Usually, order pickers are operated by electricity. These kind of machines are mainly used in a warehouse setting. Usually they are utilized for moving pallets and finishing particular jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The operator of an order picker uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting that normally sits quite near the ground. The operator can direct the machine to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks can be raised to the required level which makes it really convenient for the operator. For instance, if the materials required, are located on a shelf that the operator could not reach, then entire platform could be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, however, some companies may have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker can also put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers may be used to finish these specific tasks at some companies instead.
